Life Lessons – Live and Learn

Life Lessons, yup. Those stop, look, and listen moments that come in your life. If you are lucky, you see them coming and you are prepared. If your “spidey senses” are tingling, then you can be in a position to act or react with poise and grace, or, maybe you get knocked into the mudpuddle. That can be fun, too. Poise and grace will be there next time. If you have enough life experience under your belt, dumb luck, or a cheerful heart then you gain insight about yourself and the world. Maybe the surprises in store will take you on a whole new ride in your life. Or, at least you have a good story to tell. If you tend to learn your lessons the hard way, well, that’s another blog entry. We all know that those Life Lessons will just keep on getting bigger and bigger until we learn them.

Sometimes we find ourselves placed in a position to teach, and sometimes to learn. Usually, it’s both. When you reach a particular age, you recognize those moments in time. Honor them, even seek them out. As a parent, that is my job.

We come into the world with basic traits, some aptitudes, and a boatload of potential. And then the life lessons start with our first breath. And they just keep on coming. What we learn and how we learn defines us in many ways. It all shows, either on the outside or on the inside.

So, what do we teach our children? What are the tools in our maternal arsenals to bring them through whole. How do we get them ready for a complicated world? You know what…this conversation has been going on since we were living in caves. We look back through time with understanding and recognition. We look forward with hope and expectation. But today? Today is ours.
